As a martial artist (not in medieval weaponry although i do know how to fight with certain weapons) the provocator breastplate does seem to cover a substantial amount of space when you take his weapon in consideration, when you have a sword in one of your hands, that side of the body is basically completely covered by the sword, any attack could be deflected with nothing more than the turn of a wrist. In a fight you’re trying to look for openings, and constantly seeing an opening which is then covered by that annoying little breastplate each time would definitely piss the opponents off. And the provocator can fight knowing that that part of his body doesn’t need to be defended as much making him way more fearless. Thus i think it’s mostly for psychological defence and also a way to distract the enemy with anger.
